The environmental impact on surface water (rivers, lales and sea) and groundwater from polluting liquid waste is already considered to be significant and serious. This is mainly because the majority of this liquid waste enters these streams either with no treatment at all, or at best inadequate or partial treatment.
Significant efforts have already been made to reduce the impact of this dangerous pollution on the population at large and BIOTECS is deeply involved in these efforts. However, the equipment utilised to control and combat this pollution and its consequences on the environment are still not fully developed and remain insufficient due to a number of factors, including a lack of sufficient investment by the private and municipal sectors and a need for greater awareness of the seriousness of this issue by the general population. Above all whatis neededis a grea- ter acceptance of responsibility by those who are causing this pollution, as well as a bigger commitment to dealing with its consequences.
Polluted liquid waste can be treated by physical, chemical, physico-chemical or biological treatments and the choice of these will be determined by the quality, volume and the intended reuse of the treated wastewater.
