The production of ethanol as biofuel, for industrial, alcoholic beverages and other applications has increased in the recent years.

Ethanol can be produced from four main raw materials: fermentable carbohydrates, starch, cellulose and inulin. Sucrose is the most common since the sugars are found in a simple form of fermentable carbohydrates (for e- xample, sugar cane, sugar beet, grape and sweet sorghum).

Alcohol distilleries typically produce vinasses, stillages or molasses spent washes which are not only significantly polluted, but also damaging to the environment.

The characteristics of vinasses depend mainly on the raw material used for bio-ethanol production. Maize, barley and wheat have a high proportion of insoluble solids, while sugar cane, sugar beet, grape, agaves or sweet sorghum high concentrations of soluble solids.

From these feedstocks, 2 to 16 litres of wastewater can be obtained per litre of alcohol. These wastewaters are acid (pH 3.5 to 5.0), dark brown in colour and have a high organic content, with C0D values fom 50 to 150 g/.
